Storm Boy | Film Review

Rated: PG (would not recommend for kids under the age of 6)

Storm Boy is a beautiful & moving Australian film that manages to stay clear of the Australian stereotypes that so often mar Australian films.

Based on the book by Colin Theile (1964) Justin Monjo’s script is a fresh take on the story brilliantly weaving in the complexities current issues in Australian society along with the difficulties of modern family life. Showing Storm Boy as a grandfather, grown up & successful. Coming home to Sydney to his family to mourn a family member he walks into conflict in his family causing him to remember & recount some of his his own childhood. Shawn Seet helms a brilliant cast that masterfully bring it all to life in a raw & at times all too real way.

Showcasing not just some of the best of Australian talent both on & off screen Storm Boy also showcases Australia & some of the stunning locations we are blessed to have.

West Australian actor Trevor Jamieson along with Jai Courtney & Finn Little carry most of the film with performances that are equally heartbreaking, uplifting & inspirational. Morgana Davies is also spectacular portraying the range of teenage emotions with just the right amount of angry, hurt & hope.

Although it is a little slow moving at times Storm Boy has enough going on to keep you eagerly anticipating the next scene.

For those taking your kids there are a few scary moments along with plenty of times to break out the tissues. Storm Boy will also allow for some wonderful conversations with your kids about social issues, family, letting go of hurt, anger & how to deal with life. Those are just some of the topics covered in Storm Boy but you won’t walk away feeling like you have been told what to think, you will however still walk away thinking.

In cinemas around Australia on Thursday January 17th 2019.
